We’re recruiting a Lead Site Services Engineer for our food production client to join their Engineering and Maintenance Department.
This is a full-time, perm position.
Basic salary £50k pa
In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliable operation, maintenance, and development of all site services and utilities within the food production facility.
This includes the management and maintenance of steam boilers, steam distribution systems, compressed air, water, refrigeration, and building fabric, as well as oversight of contractors performing site works. The role supports continuous production operations while ensuring compliance with food safety, health & safety, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Site Services & Utilities Maintenance
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot site utilities including:
– Steam boilers and steam pipework systems (feedwater, condensate, traps, valves, insulation, etc.)
– Compressed air, water, and refrigeration systems
– Effluent treatment and water management systems
Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on all site service equipment to ensure uptime and reliability.
Maintain records of boiler inspections, safety valve testing, and statutory compliance (e.g., PSSR regulations).
Support energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives related to steam and utility usage.
Building Works & Facilities Maintenance
Plan and manage building maintenance, repairs, and improvements, including structural, civil, and architectural works.
Coordinate internal and external resources to complete building and infrastructure projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Ensure the integrity and hygiene of the building fabric to maintain food safety and audit compliance.
Contractor Control & Project Management
Manage all on-site contractors performing maintenance, construction, or installation activities.
Ensure all contractors are inducted, permitted to work, and operate in compliance with site safety policies and procedures.
Review risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) before work begins.
Supervise work progress and perform quality assurance inspections upon completion.
Coordinate small capital or continuous improvement projects involving utilities and building infrastructure.
Compliance, Safety & Documentation
Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation and company policies, including:
Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR)
Health and Safety at Work Act
Food Safety and Environmental Standards
Maintain accurate maintenance records, drawings, and documentation for all site utilities and systems.
Participate in internal and external audits (HSE, environmental, BRC, customer).
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reliability, and safety of site services systems.
Support and mentor maintenance technicians in utility and site service systems.
Contribute to capital planning and long-term site development strategies.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Proven experience in utilities or facilities engineering within a food manufacturing or similar regulated environment.
Hands-on experience with steam boilers and steam distribution systems.
Knowledge of contractor management, building maintenance, and PSSR compliance.
Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Desirable:
BOAS (Boiler Operator Accreditation Scheme) or equivalent certification.
IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification.
Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
Knowledge of refrigeration and air handling systems in food production.
